Rediscovering the Barbershop

For the past few months, I’ve been having my haircut at various barbershops. For most of my life, I went to unisex salons that reeked of perm chemicals and mousse. Every time I’d go, I’d walk away with a bad haircut. On top of that, I always felt out of place. Most of the clients were usually women and a woman was cutting my hair. I’d just go in, sit there silently while the person cut my hair, and leave.

I don’t know why I stopped going to a barbershop. As a child, I went to a barbershop on the main street in my hometown. It was called “The Friendly Barbershop.” I remember being fascinated with all the barber stuff. What I remember most though, was the distinct manliness of the place. Even as a young child, I could sense that a barbershop was a cool hang out for men. Twenty years later, I’m rediscovering the barbershop. You should too.

Birchbox Enters Men’s Beauty, Grooming and Accessories By Belisa Silva of WWD

Birchbox.com has unveiled Birchbox Man, a curated e-commerce site, offering men’s grooming and lifestyle products.

The online shop, at birchbox.com/men, houses more than 80 products, including accessories. Like its sister site, it will focus heavily on sampling and showcase a multi-channel “discovery commerce platform,” featuring personalized monthly box subscriptions and its own editorial content.

“With the debut of Birchbox Man, we are taking our successful, discovery shopping formula into new territory and are confident the experience will delight our new male customers and provide a great gift option for our female subscribers,” said Katia Beauchamp, co-founder of Birchbox.

Birchbox Man subscribers will receive about five deluxe grooming and lifestyle samples for $20 each month. Among the featured brands: Billy Jealousy, Costume National, Kérastase and Kiehl’s.

The upscale men’s grooming and skin care collection inked a licensing deal with Crown & Eagle to produce and distribute a collection of men’s casual sportswear under the Billy Jealousy name, and the line will make its debut at the ENK NYC show.

The initial collection will be focused primarily on tops, both knits and wovens, and will also include sweaters. There will be very few bottoms.

Jonathan Whaley, design director, said the line will blend “Italian elegance, English bespoke, Asian bounce and American cool. Put it all in a blender and you come up with what we’re calling it — American sartorial.” He said that men today dress differently every day of the week and the plan for Billy Jealousy is to “try to take all the elements of what a man wears Monday through Sunday and make it in the best yarns and fabrics.”

Woven shirts in 80s and 100s yarns will retail for around $125, pima polos, lightweight hoodies and rugby shirts will be around $100, and T-shirts are $60. Cotton sweaters will sell for $75 to $85, while cashmeres will be up to $200.

Whaley said target distribution will be to the major department and specialty stores that sell the Billy Jealousy skin care line including Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and upscale specialty stores.

He said there are no immediate plans to market the apparel and skin care elements of the brand together. “The areas are so separate from each other and it’s a logistical problem more than anything else right now, but we’re thinking about it.”
